This online Macintosh System 1.1 emulation is a homage to the most innovative operating system in computer history. The emulation offers a complete "System 1" on a 1984 Macintosh 1 bit, black and white display.

Some commentators had speculated it could fetch over $1 million, but although it broke the $300,000 low estimate that Christie’s set for the computer, it fetched considerably less than Christie’s high estimate of $500,000. The price paid was also well below the €516,471 ($663,000) fetched for a functioning Apple-1 in May this year at an auction in Cologne, Germany.

One of what's thought to be only six working Apple 1 computers -- hand-built by Steve Wozniak -- flies out of a German auction house for a tidy sum. The last one went for $640,000. One of what's believed to be only six still-working Apple 1 computers set a record at auction Saturday, selling for $671,400 in Germany. The machine, built by Steve "The Woz" Wozniak in Steve Jobs' parents garage back in 1976, was sold along with the original owner's manual and a signed letter from Jobs to original owner Fred Hatfield. Breker, the German auction house that handled the sale, sold another Apple 1 in December for $640,000, a substantial jump in price from the Apple 1 sold by Sotheby's in New York last June for $374,500.

Auctioner Uwe Breker said the appeal of the machine went far beyond the realm of geekery.

"It is a superb symbol of the American dream," he told The New York Times' Bits blog. "You have two college dropouts from California who pursued an idea and a dream, and that dream becomes one of the most admired, successful, and valuable companies in the world."

Currently, there are estimated to only be six working models of the original Apple 1 left, and one of them is going up for auction in Germany on May 25th. Computerworld reports that it was originally purchased by one Fred Hatfield, who also received a letter signed by Steve Jobs offering an upgrade from the $666.66 Apple-1 to an Apple II 4K motherboard for another $400. According to Mike Willegal, who has tracked down many Apple 1 computers, this particular one had an interface for a selectric printer grafted onto it. Willegal also says that the reason for Jobs' letter was that the original owner "complained to Apple about limited software availability."

The auction price for the computer is expected to land somewhere between $250,000 and $400,000 when it's sold off — though strangely it apparently didn't sell last year when it was put up for auction by the same company. We've seen a few Apple 1 computers sold at auction recently, with one sold in June of 2012 fetching $374,500 and another this past December for $640,000.

Although this latest Apple 1 isn't likely to hit those heights, it still has plenty going for it — it's signed by Steve Wozniak, who built the motherboard by hand. Most importantly, it's in complete working order, as the video posted by the auctioneer proves. The video shows the usual command line on the screen, as you'd expect, but also displays an ASCII-art image of Woz and Jobs printed across the screen.
